There’s a lot-perhaps too much-to keep track of, especially when most skirmishes can be solved by swinging your weapon with reckless abandon. Players can also buff their stats with different types of equipment, craft attachments to weapons to add elemental properties, and improve your stamina and rate of infection. While it may seem like a handicap at first, it does add an unexpected layer of depth to in-game exploration.Īll this combat and exploration nets you experience, which you can then invest in your character’s skill tree to learn new combat moves and parkour skills. This is made even more complex when you learn that Aiden is also infected and that staying in the darkness hastens his descent into undeath. The game makes use of a day and night cycle, so you can plan your excursions around the habits of the undead. They have a few other quirks as well-they don’t do well in the sun or under UV lights, which survivors utilize to keep the hordes at bay. It’s just as gory as you’d expect, with plenty of severed limbs and copious amounts of blood.ĭying Light 2’s zombie hordes are less like the shambling zombies of classic horror movies and more like the Olympic sprinters seen in modern media. Combat is largely the same as it was in the previous game and has you using degradable makeshift weapons to deal damage or protect yourself. In between moments of free-running bliss, you’ll find the rest of the gameplay loop, which consists of fighting zombies and Mad Max rejects, as well as all the fetch quests and landmark observation you'd expect from open-world games. This is Dying Light 2 at its finest-when it gives you the freedom to just run around its apocalyptic playground. You navigate the decaying city as you see fit, and while there are set paths designed to optimize player movement, you can pretty much climb on any surface you want to get to where you need to be. If you’ve played the first Dying Light or even Techland’s other zombie-slaying FPS, Dead Island, you’ll be in familiar territory. His search leads him to the fictional European city of Villedor, where he finds himself a pawn in an increasingly violent tug-of-war between various factions of survivors trying to, well, survive. He’s on a mission to find information on his sister, from whom he was separated at the start of the zombie outbreak. Set 22 years after the original game, Dying Light 2 stars Aiden Caldwell, a member of the Pilgrims, a nomadic group of survivors who act as couriers in the post-apocalyptic world. Dying Light 2 is so full of clichés, open-world filler, and technical issues that you might find yourself wondering what the last four years of hype were all about, but, make no mistake, there are moments of greatness permeating Dying Light 2’s bloated open-world corpse. Getting to those moments, however, might be more trouble than it's worth for some. In that regard, the $60 Dying Light 2 delivers, but it's hardly the magnum opus Techland might want you to think it is. The new game hopes to build on everything that made the first game work so well-a bigger open world, a deeper, darker story, and promises (now infamously) of almost 500 hours of content.
